An overview of complex adaptive systems

Ahmed, Elgazzar, Hegazi

Basics of complex adaptive systems (CAS)

Complex adaptive system:

  • consists of inhomogeneous, interacting adaptive agents.
    • adaptive means capable of learning
  • an emergent property of a CAS is a property of the system as a whole which does not exist at the individaul level of agents
  • must be studied holistically

Why study CAS?

CAS have intrinsice unpredictability which casuses "seemingly wise" decisions to have harmful side effects.
